OUTREACH SK8 SCHOOL
Moving Towards Wellbeing.
What might happen if a young person could discover that they are capable of more than they thought?
Our Outreach Roller Skate School uses roller skating as a positive, engaging and inclusive way to help young people become more active, build confidence, develop social connections and experience success in an environment where learning can feel exciting rather than intimidating.
We work with individual students, small groups and whole-school communities, with particular consideration for young people who may be experiencing low self-esteem, social isolation, anxiety, low mood, lack of confidence or difficulty engaging with physical activity.
Our sessions are designed to create opportunities for young people to:
-
Experience achievement and progress
-
Develop confidence in their own abilities
-
Try something new in a supportive environment
-
Build relationships and a sense of belonging
-
Develop physical skills, balance and coordination
-
Become more physically active
-
Experience positive challenge without fear of failure
-
Recognise and celebrate their own progress
-
Develop resilience and perseverance
-
Have fun and feel part of something.
WHY ROLLER SKATING?
Roller Skating Is More Than Just Exercise.
Learning to skate requires balance, coordination, concentration, body awareness, perseverance and problem-solving. A student who initially struggles to stand, balance or move can gradually experience something incredibly powerful:
“I couldn’t do this before. Now I can.”
Those moments of achievement can help young people develop a stronger sense of capability and confidence.
This does not mean that roller skating is a treatment for depression or anxiety. Rather, we use skating as an enjoyable form of physical activity that can create opportunities for confidence, connection, achievement and positive experiences.
Isolation can affect a young person’s confidence, participation and sense of belonging. Our sessions provide structured opportunities for students to interact, learn together, encourage one another and celebrate progress. The shared experience of learning something challenging can create connection in a way that feels natural rather than forced.
Students learn to: Encourage → Support → Communicate → Persevere → Celebrate rather than compete.
MOVEMENT, EXPRESSION AND EMOTIONAL WELLBEING:
Our work also connects with London Developmental Transformations (DvT), a group of Drama Therapists who use improvised therapeutic play, movement and spontaneous interaction as ways of exploring experiences, relationships, fears and difficulties.
This creates an important shared philosophy: Movement can become a way of communicating, connecting and exploring.
Our roller-skating programme is not presented as psychotherapy and our skating teachers do not provide clinical treatment. Instead, our work sits alongside therapeutic and pastoral support by creating a safe environment where young people can move, play, experiment, take manageable risks, interact with others and experience themselves differently. For a young person who has become accustomed to feeling that they “can’t”, the opportunity to experience “I can” can be meaningful.
